Read the early and medieval Church fathers in Greek and Latin!  This webpage is the easiest and most convenient way to access and use Patrologia Graeca (PG) and Patrologia Latina (PL) on the net.  The best way to use this page, besides browsing, is to search it (by pressing control-f) for the author you are looking for.  This Intro will first give background to PG and PL and then a section will follow on how to use them.

.

Background to PG & PL

Patrologia Graeca (1857-1866) and Patrologia Latina (1844–1855) are the older, standard, mostly exhaustive series of the early and medieval Church fathers in Greek and Latin, being comprised of roughly 161 and 221 volumes respectively.  They are often referred to as Migne, from their editor, the French, Romanist priest and scholar, J.P. Migne (d. 1875).

Almost all the Greek writings have a Latin translation on the facing column.  Hence, if you are able to learn and read Latin, you can read almost every father in Church history.

The volumes are in roughly chronological order.  PG goes through the 1400’s; PL goes up to the beginning of the 1200’s, right before the major Summas and commentaries thereon were published in the 13th century and following.  Some later commentaries or documents associated with earlier works are included, as well as some non-ecclesiastical writings such as have literary, historical or linguistic interest.

Some of the writings of the Fathers still have been printed nowhere else.  There is a need for modern criticial editions of each of the works in the series, which recent and contemporary publishers have been attempting to fulfill.

Wikipedia gives more background on the series:

“Though scholars have always criticised them [PL & PG], these hastily edited, inexpensive, and widely distributed texts have only slowly been replaced during a century and a half with more critically edited modern editions…  the scope of the Patrologia still makes it unique and valuable, when modern editions do not yet exist. It is a far more complete collection of Patristic and later literature than anything that has appeared subsequently or is likely to.

To create so much so quickly, Migne reprinted the best or latest earlier editions available to him.  In the PG the Latin translations were often made in the [1500’s] Renaissance before any Greek text had been printed, and so do not necessarily match the Greek text [in PG] very accurately.”

Together PL & PG make up the whole Patrologiae Cursus Completus published by Migne.  For further background on the series, see the Wikipedia pages on Migne, PG and PL.

PG is being reprinted, volume by volume, by the Centre for Patristic Publication.  The volumes may be obtained through PatrologiaGraeca.org.

.

How to Use PG & PL

Next to each of the volumes below is listed the authors the volume contains.  Where one author has numerous volumes, the works in each volume, or a description of them, is listed.  Search this page by pressing control-f to quickly find an author.

Various tables of contents to each series, simple, intermediate and exhaustive, are also provided below.

Each volume below opens up to its table of contents, or the Elenchus (or “Chain”), just after the title page.  On this page is listed the authors in the volume with their works under each of them, with the corresponding column numbers on the right.

If some of the book pages below are distorted, etc., to view alternate scanned printings for each volume, see the larger collections of volumes at Patristica.net for PG and PL.

For background on most of the Church fathers in the series, see the PG and PL Wikipedia pages, which give links to those authors.

In order to find material in these series on a given subject throughout Church history, use the various indices provided below.  For instance, finding “baptism,” “Psalms,” “historical” or “poetry” in the indices will provide you references to every place in PG or PL where a father wrote a tract on baptism, an exposition of the Psalms, has a historical work or wrote poetry.

PL has been digitized and is searchable (with many advanced features) at both the University of Chicago and the University of Zurich.  The whole digitzed works are available to read, which can be easier than reading the print copies.

PG‘s full texts can be word-searched (in Greek only) at Scholarios.graeca.org and Patrologia.graeca.org.  The whole digitized works are not available to read on these two sites.

To compare these writings with their English translation, see especially the volumes of Ante-Nicene Fathers (ANF) and Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers (NPNF) on our page, ‘The Writings of the Early & Medieval Church Fathers in English’, along with the other volumes there linked, though most of PG and PL is not translated in ANF or NPNF.

More

Helpful individual indices are at the back of each volume in the series.

Many more helpful indices are in the last four volumes of the series (see the tables of contents to each):  218219220221.  The first is full of general indices, the last three are special indices.

Here is an Index to key Latin words in a smaller set of writings of the fathers.  The reference 1 Clem. 4:10, for example, refers to 1 Clement, chapter 4 in any edition of 1 Clement.  The 10 refers to the ‘verse’ of an antiquated edition and may be disregarded.
