Largest (Mostly) Reformed Scholastic AI Dump Yet

Don’t read this if you have cardiac problems: Praise be to God, we have entered the blessed phase of history when I can hardly keep up with the AI translations being made of historic reformed works!

You will find many exceedingly precious treasures in the 150+ pieces below.  To mention only a few (be sure you’re sitting down and remember to breathe):

The Medieval Bradwardine’s On the Cause of God, on predestination, providence and concurrence, is now in English.  Where did Rutherford, especially in his Latin works, go for the most detailed answers on these topics?  Bradwardine.

Polanus’s massive Syntagma is done.  Spanheim is the best reformed scholastic (partial) systematic theology now in English.  You have not had a theological education yet.

Baxter was one of the best read theologians of his era, and the most scholastic English puritan.  His sole Latin work, his systematic theology, all 1,600 pages of it, is now available in lingua franca.

John Marck’s systematic, the foundation of Bernard De Moor’s later apex of all systematics, is complete.  Read a better Van Til: his first name is Salomon.

There is a good amount of Whitaker never seen before, new material from Francis Turretin, disputations by Voet, Davenant’s large On the Judge of Controversies; Carelton was an important Anglican writer, here against Rome on Justification; there are numerous items by Gomarus.

Yes, three of the four volumes of Voet’s Ecclesiastical Polity, as well as his disputations on the Sabbath and Festival Days are available.  You have to love hundreds of pages of new Perkins against Romanism, as well as new textual sermons from Calvin.  Melville on Romans is up.

There is a healthy section on the Christian Life with some truly moving and historic pieces.

Forbes’s Historical Theology, a foundation stone in that era, is being translated.  Yes, the Acts of the Synod of Dort have been unlocked to all.  The many theological monographs on soteriological topics by the international delegations near the front of the volume are worth more than much gold.

Bullinger’s 15 volumes of letters through his life are waiting to be mined.  Many know of Daille giving a standard analysis of the many issues involved with interpreting the early Church fathers in theological controversies, but below you have hundreds of pages of Perkins and Rivet doing the same.

We are now blessed to have multiple, standard works of reformed politics, ethics, philosophy, logic and metaphysics in our hands.  Delight yourself also in exploring below many lesser known theologians of that era.

In addition numerous previously published and copyrighted works have been translated anew and are now free online, such as Calvin’s 1541 French Institutes, Bucer’s On Christian Love, Owen’s Biblical Theology and Kuyper’s Pro Rege and Common Grace.

Baron, Robert – On Venial & Mortal Sin  (1633; 1649)  tr. Michael Lynch  Latin

Preface
Pt. 1

1. Use of this discussion for overthrowing the Papists’ doctrine on the perfection of human righteousness and merits
2. Whether, and in what sense, the Evangelicals admit the division of sin into mortal and venial
3. Various assertions on the distinction between mortal and venial sin are proposed and confirmed
4. Fivefold difference between mortal and venial sin
5. First effect of mortal sin: exclusion of the sinner from the favor of God, and on the twofold distinction of divine love
6. God can love those whom he previously hated, and hate those whom he previously loved, without any change, whether physical or moral, in his will
7. Privation of grace and the loss of the present fitness for entering the kingdom of heaven

Pt. 2

1. Papists’ position on venial sins rests on no solid foundation
2. Sin’s stain; Whether the stain which venial sin leaves behind can exclude a sinner from the heavenly kingdom.
3. Whether the reprobate’s lightest sins are mortal, not only from the outcome, but also by desert
4. Whether the lightest sins of the elect are mortal by their nature
5. Whether lighter sins, which are called venial, can be forbidden by God under the penalty of eternal death?
6. Whether, and to what extent, the malice in every sin, even venial, is infinite; and whether an infinite punishment corresponds to it
7. Whether mortal and venial sin differ because mortal sin is of itself irremissible… while venial sin is of itself remissible…

Pt. 3

1. Whether Roman Catholics rightly teach that offenses committed in a small matter do not merit the dissolution of friendship
2. Whether the sins which are called venial are simply and absolutely small offenses
3. Whether venial sins are against the law, and whether they are against the end of the law

3. On Rejoinder of Errors 1.7, Assurance of One’s Election
4. On Dordt 2.4, Christ’s death, say they, had as its companion a sense of God’s wrath, and of the curse which we merited by our sins
5. On ch. 2, art. 8, that the elect alone receive justifying faith
6. On the Synod’s teaching that faith justifies as apprehending the merits of Christ, but not as reckoned, in itself, as righteousness
7. On the reprobate having no share in the benefit of the redemption and passion of Christ; it is examined whether Christ died for all
8. On conversion being irresistible
9. On all the just persevering
10. On the just being certain of their perseverance
11. On the certainty by which the faithful certainly believe they will persevere being not harmful to piety, but instead useful
